Retrieved on April 14th 2021. It was first described as Lichen petraeus in 1787 by Franz Xaver von Wulfen,Wulfen, F.X. von (1787) Schr. Ges. naturf. Freunde, Berlin 8: 89 but was transferred to the genus Rhizocarpon in 1852 by Abramo Bartolommeo Massalongo.
