L'indigotier, indigo des teinturiers ou indigo des Indes, est une espèce de plantes à fleurs de la famille des Fabacées. C'est un arbuste des régions chaudes dont les feuilles sont utilisées pour la préparation de la teinture d'indigo. La culture de l'indigotier s'est répandue dans les régions tropicales et tempérées de l'Asie, de l'Amérique et de l'Afrique. Son habitat originel reste cependant incertain, tant sa culture est ancienne car voilà plus de quatre mille ans que la plante est exploitée en Inde, au Proche-Orient et en Égypte. Pour répondre à la demande croissante de teinture indigo de leur industrie textile en plein développement, les Européens entreprirent la culture d'indigo à grande échelle dans leurs colonies du Nouveau Monde et d'Asie. L'indigo, originaire d'Orient, traversa ainsi l'Atlantique, ruina au passage la culture du pastel en Europe, puis dans un mouvement de balancier, retourna en Asie, avant de disparaître avec l'arrivée des teintures synthétiques.
