Ameca splendens est une espèce de poissons de la famille des Goodeidae, et ce sont de vrais vivipares. C'est la seule espèce du genre Ameca (monotypique). Le nom du genre « Ameca » fait référence au nom de la rivière où l’espèce était confinée. Le nom de l’espèce « splendens » signifie « brillant » et se rapporte aux couleurs du mâle.
